'Banos Down Dogged Opponents in Try-fest
On a mild but breezy October afternoon Trebanos welcomed Glyncorrwg for the first time to 'The Green' for the seventh league game of the season. Glyncorrwg won the toss and played up the valley with the sun and the wind behind them.
Shaun Hamer got the game started and the ball was won by the Davies boys Luke and Dai, out it went from Kristian Jones to Shaun Hamer who sent a kick up field, the ball landed awkwardly; Hamer caught his own kick under the posts and only a despairing tackle by the Glyncorrwg full back stopped him scoring; the ball was won again by Trebanos and Ross Jones sent it to Rod Thomas who was tackled and eventually the ball was lost and the visitors' right wing cleared his lines with a kick to touch. Eventually a kick from Hamer put the Glyncorrwg full back under pressure and he 'knocked on' but Trebanos lost ball at the ensuing scrum; the big Glyncworrog No8 picked up and drove on; but was penalised for not releasing and Kristian Jones from 25 metres kicked the penalty after 6 minutes.
On 10 minutes back came Gylncorrwg winning a touch on the Trebanos 10 metre line. From the throw in Trebanos won ball but knocked it on, the visitors busy scrum half took the ball; played advantage and sent out a long pass to the right winger who dashed over for a good try under the posts; the outside half added the extra points. Immediately from the kick off Trebanos won a scrum in front of the posts on the 22 metre line, they won good ball and Kristian Jones sent out a pass to Shaun Hamer; the outside half gave a dummy to the on rushing defence and sprinted in unopposed under the posts for a classic outside half's try. Kristian Jones added the two extra points making the score Trebanos 10 Glyncorrwg 7.
Back came the visitors winning a scrum and receiving a free kick 10 metres from the Banos line, they took a short one but a pass to the winger was intercepted by Jordan Hopkins; the speedster raced 70 metres along the touchline only to be tackled by great cover defence work from the Glyncorrwg right wing; the ball was recycled and it went along the three quarters line with winger Cerith Edwards scoring a brilliant try out wide. Jones narrowly failed with the conversion. After 22 minutes play the Glyncorrwg scrum half attracted the attention of three Banos players; cleverly he offloaded a quality pass to the big inside centre who went down the middle and seemed certain to score; but a fantastic tackle by Amer Hussain brought him down a metre short of the line; he was adjudged by the referee not to have rolled away in the tackle and the visitors were awarded a penalty under the posts which the Glyncorrwg outside half gladly accepted and kicked it over with his eyes shut.
Credit to the Banos front row who more than coped with the big Glyncorrrwg pack; again young Chris Balfe, Dai Davies and Gareth Lynch doing tremendous work at the coalface. Making his mark in this game was a younger Declan Bale; he won ball at lineout and was everywhere in the loose; rightly winning this week’s man of the match award, well done Declan. This game was fraught with knock on’s and it became a stop start affair. The game for the next ten minutes was played between the 22 metre lines, both sides having scoring opportunities but mistakes kept the status quo. Then on 35 minutes the Glyncorrwg outside half put in a huge 60 metre kick up field which was caught by Ross Jones off he went passing to Rhodri Davies to Kristian Jones to Rod Williams to Amer Hussain to Jordan Hopkins to Rod Thomas and Captain Marvel dived in at the corner to score a cracking try. From out wide on the touchline Jones again shaved the posts with his conversion attempt.
Half time: Trebanos 20 Glyncorrwg 10
Within 2 minutes of the second half Trebanos attacked the visitors line via Kristian Jones; Rod Thomas, Gareth Hopkin and Ross Jones before the latter was tackled; the ball went loose and a scrum awarded to Glyncorrwg. The visitors picked up from the base of the scrum and their No8 drove forward; but; again Trebanos were penalised for not rolling away in the tackle and the outside half booted it into touch on the Trebanos 22m line. After some loose play by both teams, it was Trebanos that got penalised on the 22 metre line in front of their posts for the same offence, not rolling away in the tackle, the opposing outside half pulled his kick to the side of the posts.
Hamer dropped out with a long kick and Glyncorrwg ran it back through their blind side, but a pile up developed and the visitors from the scrum drove forward via the back row with pick up and go’s; the props joined in and eventually the outside half put in a lovely kick; putting the ball into touch on the home side’s 22 metre line. Trebanos won ball from line out and Hamer kicked Trebanos back down field were the ball was eventually won by Trebanos; off went Luke Davies, Declan Bale and Chris Balfe with run’s resulting in a scrum to Trebanos. The ball was won and Kristian Jones sent out a lovely pass to Shaun Hamer on to Gareth Hopkins; the barnstorming centre drew two men and off loaded a superb pass to Rod Thomas who straightened up and raced through under the posts for a wonderful try. Kristian Jones added the extra points making the score 27 - 10 to Trebanos. With 21 minutes of the game left back came Glyncorrwg with a rampaging runs from their big second row and the both props; but; whatever coach Rod Jones had said to the Trebanos players before the game seemed to be working; the home team’s tackling was superb all afternoon and it needed to be against a really big physical side. On 63 minutes the 'Ancient Borough' won a scrum on the 22 metre line, out the ball went from Jones to Ross Jones to Gareth Hopkins to Rod Thomas to Jordan Hopkins to Rod Thomas to try poacher extraordinaire Rod 'Instinct' Williams who scored a fantastic try at the side of the posts. Jones narrowly missed the conversion attempt.
Glyncorrwg's answer to Trebanos was instant, they won ball in midfield on the home ten metre line; the big second row charged forward like a rouge elephant gaining ground and setting up quick ball for his scrum half. The visitors won a penalty, off went the scrum half with a quick tap and sent an inside pass to his outside half; on hand was the winger racing up and taking another clever inside pass to score under the posts. Again the visitors outside half kicked it over with his eyes shut. From the kick off there was altercation between the teams and off went the Glyncorrwg scrum half for ten minutes in the sin bin. From the penalty Trebanos gained a throw in at the lineout on the visitors 15 metre line, Declan Bale won ball; Rod Williams came to the front of the lineout to collect but was tackled; recycled the ball went out from Jones to Hamer to Chris Balfe to Declan Bale; who; was tackled a metre short of the try line; but won a penalty; the opposition not allowing the ball to be played. From 20metres Kris Jones added the three points making the score 35-17 in Trebanos's favour.
There was more to come from Trebanos and their fitness levels were now showing; the backs had several forays into the Glyncorrwg half but their defence was resolute especially with only 14 men. Due to injuries to the visitors' front row there were passive scrums from the 71st minute onwards. It was a turnover that caused Glyncorrowg the next try; Rhodri Davies secured ball and sent a pass out to Shaun Hamer on to Speedster Hopkins; the winger raced down the touchline stepped inside but was tackled on the line; he cleverly sent an inside pass to Cerith Edwards who was looking for work from his left side position and the winger went over for his second try of the game. Kris Jones narrowly failed with the kick. From the ensuing kick out and a forward drive by the Glyncorrwg forwards, referee Mr Davies spotted some work in the dark arts of the game; the scrum half who had only just retuned to the field of play received another card and was sadly dispatched to the sideline. With little time left in the game Trebanos were awarded a scrum 10 metres out under the visitors posts; the ball went from scrum half Kristian Jones to Shaun Hamer to Cerith Edwards to Ross Jones to Jordan Hopkins and the winger dived in at the corner to score. Rhodri Thomas failed with the conversion attempt.
