Trebanos RFC Golf Day
Friday 21st September 2007 at Pontardawe Golf Club
Our first golf day got off to an inauspicious start when the Gazebo that was put up just behind the first tee for the starter, Peter Parker, took off and was last seen heading at a great rate of knots towards Palleg Golf Club. The weather provided a few worrying and sleepless nights for the organisers and that was how the early part of the day, weatherwise, turned out, “worrying”. Those worries proved to be unfounded, as true to the spirit of golf everyone turned up and despite the awful weather dutifully set out to tame the Pontardawe course.
The morning starters suffered the worst of the weather, with surprisingly two of the early teams Buster’s Ball Crackers and All the President’s Men featuring among the prizes. Another team from the morning, Led Zeppelin, having a member pipped at the post for longest drive and nearest the pin at the last hole, by one of the later starters from the 4 Screeders.
The two first places went to teams with strong connections to the Rugby Club, the winners being skippered by Club President Tudor Davies’ son Rhodri along with grandsons Joshua and Justin and the fourth member Garry Miller, with a score of 128 points. In second place were last year’s captain Chris Harries, Martin Phillips, Gerard McCormack and Adrian Dix with 122 points. In third was a team based at the host club led by Viv Date with Rob Tierney, Glen Sambrook and Roy Davies with 118 points.
All the golfers enjoyed the day and even more dutifully set out to enjoy the night with MC Phil Young warming up the gathered throng for the prize giving and draw, before handing over to Comedian / Singer Lloyd Davies who really entertained all those present.
The work of Susan Bowen, Peter Parker, Steve Doyle, Phil Young, Clive Penhale and Nigel Preece, in organising the event, very ably assisted on the day by Stuart and Caryl Doyle, Jan Parker, Ceri Thomas Stuart Fjaelberg, and Geoff Davies, ensured that things went smoothly throughout the day.
Thanks are due to the Captain, Committee and members of Pontardawe Golf Club for allowing us the use of their facilities for the day. Particular mention should be made of Steve Card and his wife Mandy for their efforts behind the bar; as well as the greenkeeping staff who had prepared the course, under the direction of head greenkeeper, Jamie Probert, who did everything he could to help us.
