Glais 19 Trebanos 13

Saturday 12th January 2008.

Big ScrumPrevious games between these local rivals have always been keenly contested, with this game being played in the same way, with both packs trying to gain dominance from the outset.  It was the Trebanos pack that gained an early edge by wrecking three of the home side’s first four scrums and they also gained a steady supply of ball from the lineout. Unfortunately the last time the team played was some ten weeks ago and it showed as the ball was either dropped or knocked on and several chances went begging.

Glais as always worked as a unit and were counter attacking from Trebanos mistakes and it was only tremendous defensive work that prevented them scoring a couple of tries during a torrid quarter of an hour.  The visitors suffered a setback with hooker David Davies Rhod's 2nd Penaltyhaving to leave the field due to a badly cut head, after a clash of heads with flanker Mark Evans, but nonetheless took the lead shortly after through a Rhodri Thomas penalty.  Trebanos extended their lead through another penalty thanks to Rhodri’s dependable boot and went into half time 6 – 0 up.

Glais started the second half in a positive way and their early pressure was rewarded with a try for replacement No8 Scott Davies, which was converted by M Kettley.  The Glais side, then scored a fine try which saw the ball moved through the backs for flanker R Wallace to loop around in support to cross in the corner to stretch the home side’s lead.

Trebanos then decided that they had a say in the game and had their best spell with the forwards getting plenty of ball and for once the ball reached right wing Andrew Penhale.  He made thirty yards and beat a few defenders, chipped the last player and was taken late, Mr Buckland had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try which was converted by Rhodri Thomas to put Trebanos back in the lead by a point.

Rhod leaps like a salmonThe pack continued to win a steady supply of ball only to see it used badly and then after a short period of pressure, the home side scored the winning try through Marcus Thomas which was converted.

The visitors then ran the ball every time they had it and for a change it was last ditch tackles and not their handling that stopped them.  But at the final whistle the score remained Glais 19 Trebanos 13, with the visiting forwards wondering what they have to do to get a win down in Glais.  Hopefully the team will have learned from the experience and will benefit from it.
