Trebanos 42 Penygroes 0

Saturday 1st November 2008.

Trebanos welcomed visitors Penygroes to Trebanos Park for the last league match before the season breaks for the four Autumn internationals with South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

Trebanos started the game in impressive fashion and were on the scoreboard after only five minutes, courtesy of a wonderfully worked try from full back Matthew Edwards, converted by centre Rhodri Thomas.

Des, Barrie, Adrian :Loyal FollwersTrebanos dominated the opening quarter of the game and were determined to entertain their loyal followers (seen left), playing some excellent running rugby with full back Edwards and winger Morris particularly prominent. Meanwhile the forwards worked hard to establish dominance at the scrummage. When a typical barnstorming charge from Trebanos second row Richard Langford was halted on the 10 yard line, Penygroes secured possession at the breakdown. However, their attempt to counterattack ended when a long pass was well read by the ever alert Trebanos flanker, Malcolm Whiteman, who intercepted and ran half the length of the field for a try near the right touchline. Rhodri Thomas missed the difficult conversion, leaving Trebanos 12 points to the good after 15 minutes. Trebanos soon stretched their lead lead to 15 points after Rhod landed an easier kick from a penalty conceded by Penygroes on their own 25 for backchat to the referee.

Pressure on Penygroes linePenygroes dominated the next 10 minutes and Trebanos conceded a number of penalties as a result of the referee's strict interpretation of the breakdown laws. It took another Whiteman interception to relieve the pressure but, just as it looked likely that this would result in another 'Banos try, the final pass, to put winger Morris clear for the run-in, went astray. But the home team kept the pressure on and were rewarded with another kickable penalty, that was duly converted once again by Thomas.

Trebanos had clearly regained the upper hand by this point, and following another powerful scrum on their own ten yard line, the ball was spun along the Trebanos backline until it reached full back Edwards who stepped outside the covering defence and showed real pace to run 60 yards and cross for his second, and Trebanos' third, try of the afternoon. Rhod Thomas added the converison from in front of the posts.

Hamer launches attack Back came Penygroes as they endeavoured to break their duck and exerted concerted pressure on the 'Banos line. Outstanding defence, led by young flanker Luke Davies, not only kept the home team's line intact but also managed to turn the ball over, allowing the home team to launch another counterattack from deep that ended when Penygroes were penalised for tackling the man without the ball. Rhod Thomas again kicked the penalty to make the score Trebanos 28 Penygroes 0 at half time.

Having replaced experienced centre Amer Hussain with Nic Damjanovic at half time, the second half started with the home side conceding a series of penalties at the breakdown as the contact area continued to be refereed strictly to the letter of the law. However, Penygroes found it difficult to make any impression on the Trebanos defence. Despite the problems at the breakdown, the Trebanos pack continued to dominate the set pieces giving scrum half Jason Bailey an armchair ride. His immaculate service from the base of the scrum allowed fly half Hamer time and space which he used to keep Penygroes pinned in their own 25 with some intelligent kicking out of hand. After Penygroes botched an attempt to clear their lines, the ball was once again spun along the Trebanos back line until it reached left wing Steve Williams who crossed in the corner for Trebanos' fourth try, thereby securing the bonus point.

Trebanos rang the changes and made a number of replacements, allowing a few of the older heads in the team a well deserved breather. Despite the sin-binning of influential flanker Whiteman on the hour mark, Trebanos continued to dominate and when possession was gained following a lineout on the Penygroes 25, a beautiful pass from wing Williams put Edwards in for his third try of the afternoon. Nic Damjanovic added the conversion from the touchline to end an entertaining encounter and cap a fine all-round display from the young 'Banos team that will have delighted coaches Chris Loader and Rhodri Jones.
